Targeting drug release to the colon – past, present and future

Wednesday 24th June – 13:35 - 13:55

Speaker:

Dr Alissa Walsh (DPhil FRACP) – Consultant Gastroenterologist, Oxford University Hospitals

This is a promotional symposium organised and funded by Tillotts Pharma UK Ltd for UK Healthcare professionals only. Tillotts Pharma UK Ltd products will be discussed during this session. The speaker has received and honorarium.

Prescribing information and adverse event reporting for Octasa (mesalazine) can be found at: https://www.tillotts.co.uk/octasa-pi-page/.

Accurate delivery of mesalazine to the colon remains a key factor in achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease. Advances in tablet coating technology have helped improve how reliably medicines reach the site of inflammation. Understanding how these technologies work can help inform prescribing decisions and expectations of treatment performance in clinical practice.

In this session, Dr Alissa Walsh, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Oxford University Hospitals, will explore the evolution of technologies designed to achieve targeted colonic release.

The session will outline how earlier release mechanisms laid the foundations for modern approaches, before considering more recent advances in coating design and manufacturing precision aimed at improving reliability and performance.

Finally, the session will look ahead to the future of targeted drug delivery to the colon, and the role formulation science may continue to play in optimising treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
